Data analytics client secures $1M+ in new business in just 10 months

Background

The client is an industrial process analytics software company. There are two parts to its analytics toolkit: the data historian and the visualization tool.

  • The data historian collects and stores data from sensors and machinery in the user’s plant.
  • The data visualization tool helps plant managers make informed decisions about plant operations by presenting real-time and historical data in an easy-to-understand visual format.

The product is complicated and niche, which is why it makes total sense their previous top-of-funnel strategy (centered around a “glossary” of industry-specific terms and educational content) wasn’t working.

  • A complicated niche with fierce competition: Lots of their SEO competitors are companies that don’t offer exactly what they do, but something similar. The other half are giant companies with dozens of different SaaS products — only a small piece of what they do is what our client does. This made it difficult for them to locate and target their ICP with content.
  • Mixed keyword intent: Behavior-driven SEO analysis revealed that many keywords carried mixed intent—some users were looking for general information, while others sought specific solutions. We identified intent-driven opportunities by analyzing behavioral signals such as search modifiers, click-through patterns, and query refinements, allowing us to prioritize terms with high commercial intent.

Skepticism toward SEO tactics: The company’s unsuccessful TOFU content strategy led to concerns about whether we’d be conversion-focused (of course, that’s literally our mantra). There was additional hesitation about backlink strategies, coupled with a limited content creation capacity (internally, they could produce only one blog per month).

The previous TOFU content strategy failed because their target audience—plant managers and engineers—conduct searches with a clear solution-driven intent. Through behavior-driven SEO, we analyzed their search patterns, uncovering that they prioritize content that directly addresses operational challenges rather than high-level educational material.

It was our job to develop a strategy, show them the “why” behind it, and prove to them that their decision to challenge their own assumptions about SEO and content marketing was, in fact, a good one.

Our precision SEO strategy

In the world of search engine optimization, there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all. We had to manually check multiple SERPs for every single keyword and page. And had to work strategically within the bounds of their limited capacity for new content production. We made sure every piece we created and updated directly contributed to conversions.

Takeaways

  • Intent is everything. Behavior-driven SEO enabled us to align content with how real users search and make decisions. By analyzing search queries in the context of user behavior—such as what motivates clicks and conversions—we ensured content resonated and drove action.
  • Don’t cast a wide net. Everyone has investment and output limitations. Be intentional and strategic with your keyword research and content creation, so every piece you publish has a profound impact on your bottom line.
  • Build high-quality backlinks to the highest-value pages. A huge contributor to our client’s success is the fact that we don’t cut corners on link building. By prioritizing high-quality, relevant backlinks to pages meant to drive conversions, we helped them get more out of each individual piece of content.
  • SEO success can equal money in the bank. When you focus on ROI and conversions from day one, there’s a direct correlation between improved SEO performance and tangible financial results.
